We trust what stands before us, while the process that made it stand remains unseen.

Recruitment materials reduce complex institutions into images and information that can be circulated, understood, and desired. Admissions processes similarly reduce complex individuals into decisions.

In this work, these materials undergo another process of reduction. They are shredded, gathered by hand, mixed with paper pulp, and pressed into the standardized form of a brick. Some fragments are selected, some repeat, some fall away; some remain visible on the surface while others become permanently embedded within.

A process filled with information, judgment, repetition, omission, and chance produces a singular, solid result.

The brick can construct as much as it can obstruct. What appears stable at the end conceals the unstable processes through which it came into being.

Why do we place so much trust in what has already taken form?

An admission decision, a ranking, a degree, an institution, a résumé, a person’s “success”—we tend to encounter them as fixed and seemingly certain outcomes.

Yet what remains invisible are the processes through which they became fixed: selection and omission, judgment and chance, access and resources.
